The airline on your reservation matters less than most people expect, and more than they think in one respect: it decides where the PNR is verified.

What does not change by airline

The mechanism. A seat is held, the airline issues its own PNR, the reservation is emailed as a PDF, and it expires. That is the same on a low-cost carrier and on a full-service one.

What does change

• Where you check the booking — each airline names its self-service area differently
• Whether the itinerary shows a direct flight or a connection through a hub
• Which routes the carrier actually flies, and so which files it suits

Choosing sensibly

Pick the airline that plausibly flies your route on your dates. An itinerary that no reasonable traveller would book — a routing three times longer than the obvious one — invites the scrutiny the document was meant to close. The realistic option is the right one.

Whether a specific fare can be held depends on route, class and date, so search the real flight and take what is available rather than deciding the carrier first.
