Checking a Dummy Ticket PNR

The PNR is the whole document. Everything else on a reservation is formatting; the six-character reference is the part that either resolves or does not.

The check, in three steps

  1. Open the airline's website — the airline on the reservation, not a booking site
  2. Find Manage Booking, My Trips or the equivalent, and enter the PNR with the surname as printed
  3. Confirm the flight, date and passenger name match your document

Do this before the document goes anywhere near an application.

What a failed lookup means

There is no booking. Not a delay, not a system that has not updated — a reference that returns nothing is a reference behind which nothing was ever created. Submitting it is worse than submitting no flight document, because a visa officer who checks it learns something about the whole file rather than about the flight.

What a successful lookup does and does not prove

It proves the reservation exists and is live. It does not turn a hold into a purchased ticket. A held booking shows as a reservation, which is what most consulates ask for at the application stage — and a few do not.

One thing that trips people up

Holds expire. A PNR that resolved when you bought it will stop resolving after its validity window, so check again shortly before you submit rather than relying on a check you ran a fortnight ago.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check a dummy ticket PNR?
Enter the PNR and the surname on the airline's own Manage Booking page. A genuine hold returns your itinerary with the flight, date and passenger name.
The PNR does not work — what does that mean?
There is no reservation behind it. Do not submit the document; a reference that returns nothing damages the whole file, not just the flight evidence.
Does a valid PNR mean the ticket is paid?
No. It means the seat is held. The booking shows as a reservation rather than as a purchased ticket.
Should I check more than once?
Yes — check again shortly before submitting, because holds expire and a reference that worked last week may not work today.

Best fare and a real person to help
I compared a few sites and Offline Booking had the lowest fare on Mumbai–Dubai. What I loved most was being able to call and have someone confirm the booking for me. E-ticket came in seconds.
