Onward Ticket for a Visa

An onward ticket is evidence that you will leave a country within the time you are allowed to stay. It is asked for in three places, and most travellers only discover the second one at the airport.

Why the airline cares more than you expect

Under carrier liability rules an airline that brings a passenger who is then refused entry pays to take them back, often with a fine attached. That is why a check-in agent can refuse boarding on a one-way ticket even where the destination's own rules look ambiguous. The agent is protecting the airline, not interpreting immigration law.

What is accepted

A reservation showing departure from the country inside the permitted period, with a PNR that resolves. In some countries a bus or train booking out of the country counts. What is accepted nowhere is a document that fails a lookup.

Return or onward

It does not have to be a return to where you started. A flight to a third country answers the same question — the departure is the point, not the direction.
