Onward Ticket for a Visa

An onward ticket is evidence that you will leave a country within the time you are allowed to stay. It is asked for in three places, and most travellers only discover the second one at the airport.

Where it comes up

  • In the visa file, as proof of intended departure
  • At check-in, before you are allowed to board
  • Occasionally at the border, by the immigration officer

Why the airline cares more than you expect

Under carrier liability rules an airline that brings a passenger who is then refused entry pays to take them back, often with a fine attached. That is why a check-in agent can refuse boarding on a one-way ticket even where the destination's own rules look ambiguous. The agent is protecting the airline, not interpreting immigration law.

What is accepted

A reservation showing departure from the country inside the permitted period, with a PNR that resolves. In some countries a bus or train booking out of the country counts. What is accepted nowhere is a document that fails a lookup.

Return or onward

It does not have to be a return to where you started. A flight to a third country answers the same question — the departure is the point, not the direction.

Requirements change by country and by airline, so check the destination's current entry rules and your carrier's conditions of carriage rather than relying on what was true last year.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as proof of onward travel?
A verifiable reservation showing you leaving the country within your permitted stay. Some countries also accept a bus or train booking out of the country.
Can I be refused boarding without one?
Yes. Airlines carry the cost when a passenger is refused entry, so check-in staff may decline a one-way passenger regardless of how you read the entry rules.
Does an onward ticket have to be paid?
A verifiable reservation is normally accepted at check-in and by most consulates. A minority of missions specifically require a paid ticket.
Does it have to be a return to my home country?
No. A departure to any third country within the permitted period answers the same question.

I compared a few sites and Offline Booking had the lowest fare on Mumbai–Dubai. What I loved most was being able to call and have someone confirm the booking for me. E-ticket came in seconds.
